8 Physical Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a mental health condition that makes a person sad and tired and brings down the quality of their life. Apart from the aforementioned symptoms, mentioned below are the physical symptoms that depression can cause.

1. Tiredness
It is common to feel tired after a long day or after intense physical activity. Those with depression, however, feel constantly tired, even if they have been lying in bed all day long. This is because the constant mental battle makes the body tired and leads to excessive fatigue.

2. Myalgia
Myalgia is a condition that causes muscle pain. It can occur due to a lot of reasons, common ones being mental stress and depression. The back muscles are the ones that are mostly affected by psychological problems. Some people struggle with chronic back pain that does not resolve with any treatment. Treating depression is the only solution to the pain.

3. Gut problems
The gut is called the small brain. It can act and react to mental health issues, and problems like anxiety, stress, panic, and depression quickly affect the gut. There are a lot of gut problems that depression causes. Few common ones are diarrhea, constipation, cramps, heartburn, bloating, nausea, and flutter in the stomach.

4. Lowered pain tolerance
Many people complain that all parts of their body pain, and they have no idea why? If no physical condition is causing the pain, depression is mostly the culprit. Those with mental health conditions have a very low tolerance to pain. It means that they find tiny physical triggers really painful. Such triggers may not bother those without depression.

5. Headaches and migraines
One of the prevalent physical symptoms of depression is headaches and migraines. Depressed people go through intense bouts of headaches, often without understanding what triggers them. Such headaches are called tension headaches, and they usually disappear after a good night’s sleep. The problem with this condition is that insomnia is common too. Lack of sleep usually adds to the intensity of the headache.

6. Vision problems
Blurry vision, irritation and a burning sensation when one blinks, and not being able to see certain colors could be symptoms of depression.

7. High blood pressure
Being in a constant state of stress can also lead to an abnormal increase in blood pressure, causing hypertension.

8. Weight loss or gain
Some people gain excessive weight because of depression, while others lose their appetite and lose weight. Both are physical symptoms of depression.

All these physical symptoms of depression can make the person even more tired and dull and aggravate their condition. Such physical symptoms also have to be treated along with psychiatric treatments.
