Effective Essential Oils to Prevent Fleas and Ticks in Pets

If you own a pet, especially a dog, you know that ticks and fleas are common problems. Some topical creams and medications can be used to get rid of these pests, but they can have side effects. There are many natural treatments that you can try too. Among them is using essential oils. Listed below are a few that are safe for use on pets.

1. Lavender oil
The pleasant scent of this oil is a natural repellent for ticks and fleas. This essential oil not only prevents these pests from latching onto your pet’s coat but also prevents the hatching of tick eggs. The antibacterial properties of the oil can also prevent infections that can result from your pet scratching its skin or coat. You can add this oil with a carrier or base oil to your dog’s shampoo or in a diffuser in your home.

2. Rosemary oil
This oil can not only be used to get rid of ticks and fleas but also heal flea bites. However, it should be noted that this oil is very powerful and could irritate your pet’s skin. So use this oil in small amounts with a carrier oil and also keep a lookout for any skin irritation or redness. Just use this oil on your pet’s collar, or add a few drops to your pet’s shampoo.

3. Neem oil
This essential oil has many uses, from reducing scars to minimizing moles. However, as this oil is so potent, it should be diluted with a carrier oil before use. You can then use this mixture on your pet’s coat. You can also add a few drops of neem oil to your dog’s shampoo to easily get rid of ticks and fleas.

4. Clove oil
Another oil that should be diluted before use is clove oil. You can make a mixture of this oil and a carrier oil to use as a spray to get rid of ticks and fleas. Ensure that you spray not only your pet but also their bedding.

5. Cedarwood oil
Widely used in pest control treatments, cedarwood oil can be used in a diffuser to get rid of ticks and fleas. When used in this way, the oil releases certain molecules into the air, eliminating these pests completely.

6. Lemongrass oil
The main components of this oil are citral and geraniol, which are very effective natural repellents. You can mix this oil with water to spray on your pet’s coat. You can also use it in a diffuser to get rid of ticks and fleas.

You can use these and other essential oils to get rid of ticks and fleas. However, you might need to check with your vet which ones are safe for use on your pets.
